Default Tough Decision; Strange 12 Bolt For $2350.00 or 8.8 For $2180.00

I can't make up my mind, I need your help guys! I started the GP with TByrne, and he's a great vendor, but I also have another guy (real cool) willing to put me into a fully bolted in version of the 8.8".

I am so torn, what to do?

Both prices listed above includes shipping.....

The money is really no different, I would probably go with the strange for resale value. A lot of it depends on customer service and wait time to get it in your hands. Tbyrne and strange are both top notch companies (not implying the 8.8 guys arent either) but after sales service is something to consider.

It really depends on which of the two has the stronger posi unit, thats the one I would pick

Thanks kp, good info and commentary. The Strange I'm ordering will have the super strength Eaton posi, the 8.8 does not. However, the 8.8 comes included with the T/A Cover. The 8.8 comes with 31 spline axles, while the Strange is a 33 spline.

'Leaning towards the Strange/TByrne because of their reputation for customer service. Final decision to be made tomorrow.

How did you come up with 2180? You can get a pretty stout, unbreakable rear for under 2K if you don't get the cover or brackets...Assuming you're getting the rear from the same person I got mine from.

As for the Strange, well...It's the highest quality 12 bolt on the market FWIW...Expensive, heavy, but strong as hell and won't break....

Damian, it is Craig. I'm hurting bad for money, but I was told that I needed the relocation brackets, stud kit, and TA Cover for a sturdy unit. Here's a paste of his e-mail:

"ok tom i checked everything out and the price is $1,950 plus 100 for the core and i will go $50 on the 3 channel set up for you i think i originally told you $100 and shipping is generally right at $100 so you will be looking at $2,100 to the door with everything you need to install it! well let me know what you want to do ok or if i can help you out with anything else ok ! have a great new year and be safe!

craig"

Very nice guy. Add on $80.00 for the brake backing plates; I want to keep my 3 channel ABS functional. Craig said he HIGHLY recommends the T/A cover. Being that I know so little of the 8.8, I trusted his judgement.

Also, it's nice to hear the good feedback on the Strange 12 Bolt. I don't plan on sprayin' out of the hole at 6k, so I'm hoping the 12 bolt can handle the load.

Thanks for your reply.

No. But if it's not on my doorstep the first week of February, I'm getting my money back. I cannot wait any longer then that week if I want to keep on time with things that I need to do before the track opens back up this year. He is a good guy and he does mean well, but he tries to do more then he can handle. And as much as I would love to have his rearend in my car, I got to do what I got to do. I have already sent an email to Billingsley Racing asking about his 9". If things with Craig don't work out, I'll probably end up getting Billingsley Racing's 9" if I can get it the way I need/want it.

That right there is the reason you should get the 12 bolt. Strange takes about 2 weeks, Moser takes about 2-3 days. Also, the 8.8s have not been proven at the track yet, IMO.

Shawn, you are incorrect. 8.8's have been proving themselves @ the track for the last 20 yrs in the Mustang. Just because they're retrofit for an F-body does not make them any weaker.

Xerxes, sorry man, hopefully Craig will get you straightened out. You have been MORE than patient. Good luck buddy...

Well, you're partially correct. Mustangs have ran 8.8s successfully for 20 years without a ~36" "ladder bar" welded/retrofitted to the front of it, with pieced together axle tubes . I just have a hard time believing that the mount will hold up, from the pictures that I have seen. The whole reason to replace a rearend is peace of mind, and for the $170 differrence, I would go with the rearend that has been proven multiple times in an fbody, not to mention he would have had it 5+ months ago. I tought the whole selling point of the 8.8 was that it was "crazy to pay $2000+ for a rearend"? All IMO, it may hold up fine, internally an 8.8 is more than up to the task, we'll see.

I would get the 12 bolt based on the wait time issues with the other one.

Yup guys, the decision is made. Thank you. I would love to give Craig some biz, but I tend to be impatient with these things. Plus, I have someone waiting to buy my 10 bolt stocker with 11k on it (as of last week).

I'm calling TByrne on my lunchbreak today. Anyone have any comment of the "Super Duty Posi" for the Strange?

I would go with the upgraded posi. For only doing it 1 time the extra money is worth it IMO.

Well, this just in. My total for the Strange is now above $2600.00 because of the upgraded super posi, plus I have to buy a new set of brake backing plates. And this is with a GP price.

$2059(base)+$145(upgraded posi)+$300(backing plates)+shipping($80.00?)=Me no longer can afford this.

The turnaround time of 8.8's is very uncertain, so guess what?

Moser gets my money

I think kp's comments about resale value are well taken.

Xerxes, 6 months for any rearend is wayyyyyy too long. And you folks got on my *** for censoring posts about that 8.8 rearend, I told you if we have a relationship with a company stuff like that happens once or twice but after that they either straighten up or lose business or we boot them.

I have a Moser 9" and it's seen 500 passes and has never broken.
