Default clank sounds when starting in drive/reverse

hey guys, im hearing a clanking sound from my 98 ss camaro. its a automatic. when i shift from drive to reverse or opposite especially, i hear a tinny sounding clank and if i keep pushing the gas harder, it clanks even more. usually 1 to 5 clanks. but after those, it stops. i do a lot of manual shifting and engine breaking, but no hard hitting shifts or neutral drops. i can tell its somewhere between the back of the transmission and the rear end, but from the sound of it, it definitely sounds like the clank sound is the aluminum drive shaft clanking. could it be a u-joint? or rear end gears? the car has 108000 miles on it.
