Default question about a torsen rear

just got my 4.10s in the rear all shimmed and ready to go had to grid the paddle down a lil bit , now my question im unfamilure with these units with the car in the air if you spin the wheels it takes a few seconds for the rear to lock if you spin it by the pinon it wil lock right away. is this normal for a delay to lock the rear or is it just because there is no load on it being in the air ?just want to make sure before it goes back together and figured someone may have some insite on this ?

I was just about to ask the same question. Mine does the same thing. Spin by the wheels it doesn't stay locked all the time.

No I am in the process of reassembly after ring and pinion change. I just noticed mine doing the same thing. It will hold for a revolution or so and then let go, then pick back up, then let go, so on and so forth. I just chalked it up to how the torsen behaves with the wheels off the ground. Might be wrong but am going to try it like this.

A Torsen style diff requires some load on both tires to "lock". If both tires are in the air, it will act just like an open diff.

^^^what he said, the Torsen will spin the other tire the opposite direction as opposed to an "LSD" or spring/clutch type that will turn the wheels the same direction

Sounds normal, to a certain degree. There are more moving parts that have "play" from tire to tire, rather than just pinion to gear

Yes that is normal like was previously posted with a Torsen you have to have resistance on both wheels for it to engage properly. When spinning the pinion you are actually rotating the ring gear not the spider gears because the case turns as a whole unit.
