Default motive gear issues?

i just ordered some motive 3.73s, but my buddy said he has seen significant quality issues with the gear faces prematurely wearing away 1/8''

i know they have a 500 mile break in period, could the customers not have been following this?

what are some of your guys' experiences?

Gear sets that are not broken in properly will wear faster. They need to go through a work hardening process. That said...I just installed a motive set in my 9"...I was sorely disappointed when I looked on the box they came in and it said Made in Korea.

If the box is blue(stock performance) they will whine and wear faster, if you get the orange box (performance version) they will be fine.

Motive standard gears are made in Korea
Motive Performance gears are made in Italy
Most GM gear sets from Motive (performance gears) are reboxed AAM gears.

Gear sets require a proper break-in period

Anyone that sells motives gears will be able to sell you the performance gear sets. I prefer AAM gears but that is just me.

I recently ordered Motive gears for my 9 inch through Strange Engineering and received the performance ring and pinion made in Italy....Just a heads up to those of you wanting the performance Motive gears.

The weird thing about the Motive's I bought (from summit) I ordered the street gear, the box that came is orange and said Performance Gear, the tag says Made in Korea....go figure. Box was dated 9/09 so they are fairly recently made.

Do they whine? Installed yet? How much for everything?

I just got the car all back together and took it for a spin....yes, they whine alittle, but not nearly as bad as the little 10 bolt I used to have. This was my first time setting up a 9" ring and pinion. I was unhappy with the runout on the ring gear...it was .004 no matter how I installed it onto the carrier.

I have a 10 bolt and was just curious cause I want gears with as little whine as possible

AAM or SLP/GM gears seem to be very dependable in terms of quietness. Motive used to be, but since they moved their manufacturing they've been problematic.

The last set I had installed had a "P" in the pinion depth inscription. Great. Try measuring that. Calling their tech support was wasted time. The shop did it the hard way...assemble, measure, disassemble, shim, repeat multiple times.

Mine came in a black box too. Was the 1st set I ever installed and don't make hardly any noise. Got almost 1200 miles on them now and still going strong. I also put in as much as I could to "beef up" my 10 bolt, so that may have helped some...
