Default Any "dead quiet" 12 bolts out there?

I have 4.30s and they whine a little on decel, and I want to go down (numerically) in gear ratio. What brand of gears are the best as far as being quiet. I know it is in the setup, I guess what I'm asking is what ratio and brand of gear you have, and how quiet is it? Anyone got a silent 12 bolt?

I've heard quite a few silent 12 bolts. It's all in the hands of the installer IMO. Gear quality does make a difference, but installation is crucial for a quiet gear.

i have found that richmond gears are usually louder then most that i install. i have never had any noise after installing GM gears. i think that richmond might machine them at a different angle or something.

Got to disagree with you there Josh. The silent 12 bolt is in the hands of the driver. After a dozen 5000+ rpm launches, the driver makes them loud. If you don't want them loud don't put tires on, and leave hard.

There are exceptions. I have Richies, and they are quieter than the stock ever was.

Another vote here for the install...

Higher nickel content is accounted for the noisier aftermarket gears, but that also makes 'em stronger.

HUH..WHAT....CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THE GEAR NOISE!!! :o)

Mine screams at me so loud from 50 - 70 mph that it gives me a headache. I've had 2 sets of US Strange gears now and both started out with a -slight- whine and after a few hard 5k launches got super noisy. Moser set up the first set, I did the second.

I'm having a set of Motive gears installed tomorrow. We'll see how these gears and setup will last after some 5k+ dumps.

Got the gears in over the weekend. There is a *tiny* bit of whine around 55-65 mph, but nothing the radio won't cover up. The guy said he couldn't get them perfectly quiet because of the alignment of the housing.....damn Moser housing.

At any rate....the Motive gears are working good so far. MUCH better than the 2 sets of noisy US/Strange gears I had before.

Mine is very quiet. I had my rearend setup by a local gear guru. Cost me $200 for his expertise.

Fact is guys you are buying an aftermarket performance parts meant for racing.. Nothing is going to be silent.

Once you start abusing these things, yes they will get louder and louder.. Think of how much strain you are putting on the gears everytime you launch at 6000RPM.

My 12-Bolt is pretty quiet, you can hear it a bit around 50mph, but other than that it is quiet... But mine hasn't had any abuse on it (And actually its for sale).

The Moser 12-bolt in my '02 has always whined. Even before ever taking the car to the track.

If it bothers me, I just turn on the radio.

Mine sound like a pack of coyotes live in there. It does not matter what speed , accel or decell . They are loud period. I am going to change to 4.30 strange gears and give them a try. I have never left over 5000 rpms and my best 60 ft is a 1.678 and that was on NIttos. This thing go louder during the first drive around the block when I put the 12 bolt in. I remember pulling out of my drive way thinking ( OH! finally a quiet rearend) This thing is worse than my 10 bolt.

I spoke to the reps at us gear after problems with my rear end and they told me they
don't design any of the gears to be queit when you go deeper than 3.73.

it is my experience that the closer to the strong side you set the gears up at the louder they will be...and the weaker the quieter.

i would set them up dead center and leave it at that. i would never sacrifice weakness for loudness.

just my thoughts...

Mine is nice and quiet considering it's only had about 30-40 passes onit (Moser w/ 4.10's) and I've only been to the track on Nitto's but it may change on a slick I've been told. Only noise I hear is at 70-80 MPH.....typical gear noise but nothing that is annoying....just turn up the radio a slight bit or open your window.

My 12 bolt w/ 4.10's is quieter than the 4.10's I had in my 10 bolt.
