Default 7.5 inch tubes on 8.5 inch chunk

Ok, I've got a 7.5 inch rear end and an 8.5 inch out of a truck. Is it possible to cut the axle tubes off both of them and weld the 7.5 inch tubes onto the 8.5 inch center chunk and put 8.5 inch axles into the 7.5 inch tubes? Are the tubes close enough to the same size for this to work or am I thinking too far out of the box?

I don't think you are far outside the box at all..It would be similar to the 8.8 process found in this section, search 8.8 build and gether the info from there.....I like the 8.5 GM rear alot however i was unable to locate an older style 8.5 that had good gears (3.42-4.10s) for my build and well we are on a budget.......Captain B.O.B Baller On Budget LOL
