Default Help with 4.86 Richmond Pro gears 79-0060-1

I am not a pro builder, but have installed lots of gear sets in 8" Ford, 9" Ford, Dana 44, Dana 60, GM 10 Bolt (7.5 & 8.5) and GM 14 bolt, ratios 2.76 to 4.88. I have been able to get what I would call an "adequate" pattern on gears, even on used stuff, and never really had any of them make much noise.

I bought a set of used Richmond Pro gears out of a 9.5X second Mustang, 9" Ford, 35 spline pinion, 4.86 ratio, 34 tooth ring, 7 tooth pinion. I was unable to get a "good" pattern on the drive side, so I just played around until I got a "fair" pattern on the coast side.

They under moderate acceleration up to full throttle, they don't make much noise at all.
Under moderate deceleration (engine braking) they don't make any noise.

Coasting they make a very very very loud howl...as soon as a small load is applied, accel or decel, the noise goes away.

I am going to pull the pinion and check the pattern again... any suggestions?

you have to remember, Pro gears are a lot softer than 8620 "street" gears. i also have to say, unless you have the pattern the gears were broke in new, it will never be right. this goes double for pro gears that wear faster.

also pro gears being softer than 8620's they will create more heat on the street and not last very long at all. pro gears are made for the track only.

my guess is since they are pro gears, the pattern has worn in deeper than 8620 gears and basically, the teeth are riding on valleys insted of the teeth themselves.

was your pattern small and kinda off center?

You CANNOT drive Pro Gears on the street. If you have, they are done. Pro Gears are made for drag racing ONLY! Any attempt to drive them on the street will burn them up, hence the gear noise you probably have.
