Default Can 2.73 be a 3 series?

I had my 2.73's swapped for 3.73's thinking its 2 series because of rpo code GU2 I compared another set of 3.73's 2 series to the 2.73's the 2.73's are thin like a 3 series gear, is this the way it is or what, I am now kind of worried that I have a 2 series gear in a 3 series rear. Someone please ease my mind!!!

GU2 IS 2 series.
The distance from the centerline of the pinion to the carrier flange surface where the rear gear mounts determines carrier series.
The reason the 2.73 ring gear looks 'thin' is because of the large appearing diameter of the pinion teeth on the pinion thus a less of a dimension is needed for the ring gear.

so what u are saying is that the 2.73 is supposed to be thin like a 3 series ring gear would because of how large the pinion is, so I do have a 2 series rear, correct me if Im wrong

i think i just ran into this problem today. i've done gear swaps on my truck before and never ran into any problems. first time doing one on my camaro. so i have a 95 v6 rear axle. code gu5. i got an auburn style posi carrier with 2.73 gears out of a ls1 firebird. i wanted to use the 3.23 gear off the v6 open carrier. i put the 3.23 gears on the posi carrier in and had way too much backlash. tried to adujst the shim pack and started thinking that they were different series carriers. so as of now i'll have to go with the 2.73. what stock gears could i use on this carrier? i would really like a set of 3.42's

That donor posi you bought is a 2 series posi. It's not just the gears that are 2/3 series, its the whole carrier. You can't bolt stock 3.23s to it. If the car starts with a posi 2.73, then the only gear that will work correctly will be a 2 series gear. Motive makes these in a bunch of different ratios including stock ratios like 3.23.
