Default To much gear oil?

Just got my car back from shop again because of pinion seal leak, he said he put to much gear oil in it and thats why its leaking. Is this true that to much oil will make it leak from pinion, because its still leaking. I think it leaking from seal defeats the purpose of a seal, I dont know Im not a mechanic. the car is a 01 formula with late model pinion seal.

You cant really over fill it. When you fill it what ever is extra will be coming out the fill plug

It was coming out of fill plug but its not now just pinion seal, I have the 10 bolt with a T/A cover, I think the guy was just tryin to blame the leak on overfill just so he didnt have to actually inspect or replace seal.

Sounds like it. I would take it to someone else and have them replace the seal

>>the gm procedure for replacing the pinion seal,, you measure the pinion rotating tq with the brakes/ rotors removed so you are just free spinning the carrier/ axles,, get that measurement, remove the pinion yoke, replace the seal,, then tighten the pinion nut to your original rotating tq measurement + 3 inch pounds tq.

i never tried this my self.
good luck Johnny

Wow! that is a amazing answer, almost as bad as the one i heard yesterday...

"not to put new gear oil in, because it will wreck everything"

The seal is leaking.... When i do a serious off-road diffs i over fill them, reason being they're going to be doing things with the truck that shouldn't be done, like playing submariners, and sand hogs...
So I over fill, run the breathers to a quick location to be closed off so the diffs have positive pressure in them....
In that case it is better to push out then draw in water and sand....

So you simply have a bad seal.....

Measure the pinion drag you have now and then put it back at the same drag without going more.....

So if you have lets say 20 INCH pounds of load, you want it back at 20 INCH pounds of load.....
and when you get close make sure and tighten it with tiny increments,,,,, like a 1/8" pull on the breaker bar... NO impact guns....

Put blue loctite on the threads when you put the nut back on...

Its possible IMO. I replaced the fluid in mine and it leaked a drop or 2 a day for a week or so then stopped. Guessing it was just a little over full.

You do understand that when you are driving, the ring gear is slinging ALL the oil to the front pinion bearing, that builds up and is forced to the main pin bearing......

Now think about that for a moment.... now when the car is sitting and it has no pressure build behind the seal from the gear pumping the oil forward...and now it's leaking...

So keep that in mind, and now replay that reasoning/answer back in your head they gave you.

Both my trucks are over filled.... that's 4 diffs that aren't leaking...

When you replace the seal put a bit of oil or lite grease on the seal...

Some people wipe them all down and the end yoke and that isn't good, most seals come with a lite grease on them...
