Default What is the "right" way to pick gears for you car

I've done everything else to my car now and I am thinking about a gear swap. I have a 00' Hawk M6 w/ 3.42 gears running a 275/40/17 NT05R drag radial.

My cam is 226/230 .598/.600 112+2

I know people put anything from 3.42's to 4.56 gears in stock cars.

Is there a "best" gear for any certain combo and if so how do you get there?

I am still rolling on the stock 10 bolt for now and have wondered if doing gears is even worth it. I have read deeper gears, 4.10's, are thinner and weaker.

I have not had the car dyno'd yet so I don't know where it makes peak power at. I would assume this would be one of the things needed to pick the "best" gear.

Thanks guys.
