Question Picking gears. '00 Z28.

I have an a4 2000 Z28. Recently found out that I have a very "weak" set of gears (2.73). My buddy is running 3.73s on an automatic, and another 4.10s on a manual. I know of a guy with 4.10s in an automoatic...but have heard that's too tall of a gear for an auto. I'm looking for low end pick up, not high end speed. Gas mileage is not that big of a concern to me. I'm just trying to see what people are running and what they think of it. Also heard there is a 3.91 (i think that's the decimal).
Thanks for any help, I appreciate it.

I'm running an A4 w 4.56s' for 3 years now,picked up a used set of Richmonds at a swap meet for $25. Installed them(I work on rearends) and have not thought twice about it. Low end pickup is phenominal,top speed is around 140,and gas mpg turned out to be better than anticipated. The OEM 3.23s gave me 24.5mpg on 6 trips to Florida from Cleveland,3 trips to Florida with the 4.56s' gave me 21.5mpg. Those figures are for travelling at freeway LEGAL speeds.

I have the 273s in my car and I went with 373s. I have seen on here going from 273s to 373s help people .28-.34 in the 1/4 that is if you can hook. I have seen some people pick up even .40..

What are your goals? Street, highway, drag, road course? 4.10's in an auto will limit your overall top speed, drivability, and highway driving. Unless it is an all out drag car, I would stick to 3.42 to 3.73. If you just want a little bump and keep some gas mileage plus possibly save money, find a rear from a M6 (3.42). In the end it all comes down to your goals, how often you drive your car, what you're willing to sacrifice, and $$$$.

373s if you want max et for what you have while being streetable and getting decent milesage. If a power adder might be in your future 342s.

The car is my daily driver, but I don't drive long distances, not much on the highway either. I'm not looking to drag my car, or for a high top speed. Mostly I'm looking to pick up more acceleration. My friend says (estimated) I'll gain about 75hp going from my 2.73s to 3.73s. Basically I just want more low end acceleration than high end speed.
Thanks again for all your input.

going from 2.73s' to 3.73s' will increase your torque to the rear axles by 37%. there will be no gain in horsepower. without changing the horsepower of the engine,horsepower to the tires will remain relatively constant,torque is what accelerates the car.

Auto = 3.73
Manual = 4.10

By far the best options unless this is a specific purpose built car.

Yea, I know torque is acceleration. Maybe my friend misspoke himself and said horsepower when he meant torque. And thanks for the input Jeff. I'll prob end up going with 3.73s. Thanks again for the help all.

So I've narrowed it down to two gear choices, but I'm really concerned about whine!

1st choice: Motive 3.90

2nd choice: GM 4.11

Anybody have either cobinations in their F-body 6spd ?

I just installed GM (AAM) 4.10 gears from JAWSGEARS a couple weeks ago. Love it and no whine. Just make sure you install them correctly. Take your time. Or take to someone you trust to do the necessary extra steps.

2.73's to 3.73's

Still have 65 miles worth of heat cycles to go to fully break them in, but I have had to quarter-half throttle it once or twice since I got them and can already feel a HUGE difference.

I'm currently getting about the same mileage as I was with 2.73's, but it could be because I am still doing heat cycles and not flooring it everywhere
