Question What gears to choose?

So I've narrowed it down to two gear choices, but I'm really concerned about whine!

1st choice: Motive 3.90

2nd choice: GM 4.10

Anybody have either cobinations in their F-body 6spd ? ( I have a 98 WS6 6spd with 3.42 factory gears. No noise ..

3.90s & 4.10s are hard on a 10 bolt rear. If you go Motive make sure you get Motive Performance gears.

I would say just don't bother with putting gears in something that has a huge potential to fail.

Just save up for that 9inch or 12bolt.

why is the 3.90's hard on the rear end? How do you like your 3.73s?

Your sig. shows you have a M6 ,,6 speeds are very hard on a 10 bolt ,hard launches ,power shifts ect. Don't get me wrong 4.10s are a great gear for a m6,but you will have to go with a 12 bolt or 9" rear if it is to be driven hard..3.42s to 3.73s will gain you some but not much. Most guys will say its not worth it....I have a a4 and they work great with a high stall convertor & 3.73s.. A4s do not hit the rear as hard as a M6. Example...I have 416rwhp/465rwtq and 165 1/4 mile passes on it..My brother had 4.10s in his 10 bolt and got 5 passes out of it & he was stock power. Hope this helps you......Dave

Question Do you think that the 10 bolt would hold up with 3.90s

Dlk1950, Thanks for your reply. I have a couple questions.

Do you think that the 10 bolt would hold up with 3.90s under the following conditions: 1) 1000 miles a year 2) just back country road drives, no strip action 3) Occasional hole shots of 2000-2500 light dump of clutch 4) No sticky tires or slicks

Also, You stated "If you go Motive make sure you get Motive Performance gears" Is that because theres a known problem using regular Motive 390s?

Will the Performance gears be noisy ?

Thank you again for your answers!

Joe

Joe I think if you take it easy on it ,it could hold up.I was told by a couple of installers that reg.motive gears were made in Korea and they had set up issues with them.they said motive perf.were made in Italy and were better quality. If this is true or not I don't know. With all the passes on my car & it starting to make noise, we are going to tear the rear apart this winter and rebuild it & put motive 3.90s in. cause I need a few more rpms. Jaws Gear & Axle are a sponser on here and its worth talking to them......Dave

Cool Dlk1950

Thanks Dave, I'll reach out to Jaws. I really am leaning towards the 3.90s' and plan to get on it with an occasional low RPM hole shot. I just don't want the whine or problems.

Thanks again for all your input!
