Default aftermarket or factory gears?

Hey guys I'm looking to go through the rear-end in my 98 TA A4 with traction control. Looking to go with 3.73's but my question is are aftermarket gears better than OEM I have told the materials used in aftermarket are more tolerant to abuse than factory, is this true? Additionally, do I need a new posi-track unit when changing from 3.23 to 3.73 ratio?

Some are , some are not, I like American Axle & Manufacturing (AAM) - ,
they make some OE gears

NOPE, 3.23/3.73 both use a series 3 carrier

I went with GM 3.73's, they were more money but the guy doing the install hated motive gears so he sold me on the GM ones....with these rearends I don't think it realy matters which gear you go with(GM or motive)there all weak, but if you stay away from dropping the clutch off the line they will last for a while IMO Just like anything if your hard on it it's not going to last as long.
