Default Wop Wop Wop noise from rear

Help in identifying a noise from the rear axle:

At speeds in excess of 10 mph I start to hear a wop wop wop wop noise, that increases in rhythm with increases in speed. So the faster I go, the closer the wopwopwops are together. I Wish I could more accurately describe the sound. 103k miles on the car, its been going on for about 30k miles, off and on. Stock 10 bolt with summit diff cover. Shocks I know are worn out and need replacing. This is my daily driver and I am not interested in upgrading the rear to a 12 bolt or a 9 inch.

I had a guy that knows ls1s ride with me and he mentioned it is likely pitting on the axle shafts, and I will need new shafts.

Might it be the side bearings?

If it is the axles, axle replacements (I have a 3 channel) are as easy as popping out old seals and bearings and installing them? Any tips or tricks? Is there a writeup about this anywhere?

Drive it til it breaks. It would suck if you replaced them and it didn't fix the problem. Go ahead and purchase an extra 2-300 dollar 10 bolt rear end to throw in there when yours takes a ****. If this "wop wop" has been going on for 30k miles, I wouldn't mess with it, it might last for another 30k miles. Just pretend it's like your engine with the piston slap, let it be.

I've taken a video of it. That rumbling noise is not my exhaust - it is the rear end. Sounds like I am driving on super swampers. This has been going on with 2 sets of tires, so I've eliminated those. Its loud enough where it is louder than my cat back borla exhaust.

Just posted it to Youtube (might take a while to go live)

Just going by your description (vid not available yet), it sounds like the ring gear. About 10 years ago my ring gear bolts started coming loose and made a sound very similar to what you're describing. It could be a slightly bent axle putting strain on the dif/ring gear. Is there a vibration associated with the sound?

The video is live now. There is no vibration that is obvious, just the noise.

Just listened to the vid. I'd pull the cover and inspect the ring/pinion. I suspect either a broken tooth on one of the gears, or you have a bearing on it's way out.

hard to say but as loud as you describe it its ring and pinion related.. I had a set of 4:11 gears loose teeth sounded like rail road tracks as did a time when bolts came loose on a JY rear I got one time (like mentioned already) and on another rear I cracked the pinion gear between two teeth. axles bearings are usually more of a grinding noise or roar type sound much faster pattern yours is slower you should pull the cover and see whats up

i think your problem sounds like the one i had. For me i would describe it as a "woosh woosh woosh" and the sound would increase steadily from about 10 mph and be annoying as hell on the highway. I just dealt with this for a year then said enough is enough. Turns out it was just the axle bearings, replacing them could hardly be any easier, believe there is a nice write up somewhere on here. From what i read, some people in this situation will have pitting on their axles and either buy axle saver bearings or just replace the axles. My axles were completely fine luckily and i didnt need to do this. Good luck!

Pull the cover off and take a look. Remove the drive shaft and see if you have play in the pinion bearings. I bet the pinion is loose. Its time for a rebuild.

Auto or 6 speed? If you have been beating on it and you have a 6 speed you can crush the crush collar on the pinion and cause the pinion bearing preload to be loose. I think that is what happened to my car and is the reason I have mine apart. I bought a crush collar eliminator shim kit for $17.00. A little insurance.

Dose it get louder or quieter when turning left or right? If it dose it's more than likely your axle bearings. There easy to replace but being you've been driving on them like that for 30k your axles are probably shot. Get new ones, I had bad luck with axle savers on my novas 8.5 10 bolt.

I had the same problem , from the sound its making, it sound like you have a cracked carrier. I had a carrier brake across the cross pin on one side and it was rubbing the pinion.

Yes, it does get louder as I turn on the interstate. I've got some new axles and bearings, I will be installing this weekend.

Youre on the right path. Axle savers are worthless. New axles and wheel bearings are the way to go.

New axles and bearings took care of this problem, thanks.
