I'm going to assume you're complaining about inner and outer pinion races. Once it gets 'cocked',it's virtually impossible to get it in any farther. When I feel unusual resistance,I knock it out and start over. Gotta make sure it's going in properly and not 'cocked'. Once it's started properly, work it in with taps at 90 degree spacing in a circular pattern. I just use a big brass rod to walk them in. You can grind down the OD(to make sure you're not pressing that in also) of the old removed race, flip it over and use it as ring to 'hit/tap. Also the new races have to be seated COMPLETELY.

I always used the freeze method the gum off idea is a awesome one I will have to try that next time. For the carrier/pinion bearings I use a hot plate with a steel coffee can full of oil to warm them up and they slide right on.

Definitely lube the hole before inserting it. And you have to go slow at first focusing on keeping it straight. Once its in a ways you can really hammer down on it. Its takes patience getting it started

with the races going crooked, you don't have to necessarily "start over". When it happened to me on both races, i just tapped them back out slightly all around the edge to get them free, and started forward again. Did this a couple of times on both, and they seated just fine
I will definitely try the freezing techniques next time though; that sounds easy enough to try.
