Default Need to make a 3rd gen rear fit 4th gen? Dana 44

A friend of mine told me he has found a 3rd gen Dana 44 for $150 at a local junkyard. He said the guy just thinks it is a regular 3rd gen rear, which is why he is selling it so cheap. What would I need to do to make this work in a 4th gen? How much should it cost to modify it to work?

This would be a very low cost way to have a strong rear in my car, so I want to try to make it work.

it will bolt in if its a 3rd gen but they are i think 3in narrower and idk what you would have to do to get the brakes to work but you better look it over real good i have never seen a dana 44 in a 82 up f body

they will bolt up , its just going to be narrow and the brakes will have to be played with . 1.5 on each side narrow so either custom rims or the way i dont like , spacers.

if its a dana 44 you could sell it and use the extra to grab a 12 bolt off the classifieds. I would guess its a 9bolt though

yes, they were a GMPP item , a replacement for people who kept blowing up the 9 bolts and 10 bolts and also came on the firehawk

9bolts were very common on 350 formulas and many T/A's before 1990 infact I have only seen the 9 bolt under the 89 formula 350 cars and the 305's were hit or miss

Dana 44 thirdgen

9 bolt in the back ground

Im pretty sure its 10 bolts. would have to look at a picture of a gasket to know for sure. but it will have a screw in plug. the 9 bolt is 9 bolts and has a push in rubber plug

Wow man, what an opportunity. In the past i had 89 GTA with nine bolts i even put an strange 3.70 in that one. Now all 89 Turbo TA came with Dana 44 and SLP sold many of them as an upgrade for 3 Gen. f bodies.
