Pros and cons of piecing together a 9"
I've been shopping around for a 9" and am thinking about buying the moser housing and axles and buying the center section seperate. My reasoning being cost. $920 for the housing plus $100 or so for abs and I've got a guy that will sell me a rebuilt center section for $400. $1420 is a lot less than the $2200 for a new complete one. Has anyone else gone this route and am I missing something as to why it's so much cheaper other than the center not being brand new.

The stock fr0d center section (which is what you're going to get for $400) is now where near as strong as the Moser/Strange/whoever nodular iron case. I'm not saying it wont work it's just not as strong at the aftermarket pieces and that accounts for the difference in price.

What about if I put new, aftermarket gears in it? Also, I'm only at 500rwhp right now so do you think the stock ford stuff would work for now, at least 1 summer ( 5-10 races).

you will end up busting you differential or spidergears long before a regular 9 case will break. but ask anyway what type of case the guy is using.

i was going to do the same thing with a 12 bolt housing. main reason beeing cost. i already have a posi and can assemble everything my self. i came up with $1500 to do this which is $700 less then a complete one. on the 9", i have never seen a non nodular center section break in a street car. although, i have seen plenty of carriers break so just make sure which one that guy is going to use.

I have pieced together 2 9" rears for the sake of cost. I used Moser housings, a Strange case, a Moser aluminum case, Randy's R&P supports and yokes, a locker, and a spool. I saved.

unless you are launching, very hard @ the track on slicks the cast center section will hold up, may think aobut buying an aftermarket carrier support, i launch me 69 camaro@ 4000 rpm and run 10's very violent launch with a stock cst center section and stock carrier bearing support, i run an automatic so the shock isnt there from the clutch, check local shops for housings, as long as they are a reputable chassis shop they can build your housing for a better price, step and get the aftermarket axles

I am running a Moser housing and their axles, but I am running a used Strange nodular iron center section with a newer Tractech soft locker. I bought the center section used with a 3.50 gear and Auburn posi back in 2000 for about $450 so I had about $1500 in the total rearend until I changed a few things.
I personally won't run a stock Ford center section but you probably could get away with it.

you can get the moser case to your length for cheap.. but going with their bolt in housing, 950 or so, and then there's that T/A bracket, bearings, housing ends, brackets to weld on, ect ect.. it can be done cheap but it's work. i pieced mine together from a muscle car tech housing, ME axles, richmond gear, auburn pro-posi ect ect.. got about 900 total in it.
