Should I throw gears in since I've got a higher stall?
Have a light light pinion washing sound in my car right now. Not very loud at all, but it's there.
It's an A4 with 2.73's and a thunder rear cover but has a built tranny and 3400 rpm stall.
Should I dump some 3.42's in it as well as a full rebuild? I made 3 8.40 1/8th passes at 85.38-85.41mph. Just curious how much the gear change would help? I read only .1, but I just struggle to believe this. My car really starts pulling hard around 85mph lol.
The car is a street sleeper. Livernois ls6 heads and a 218 cam. Pulls good but seems to be lacking bc of the gearing.
What do you guys think? I figure since it's making some noise and I can do the full install/rebuild free that it would be a great time to upgrade the rear end to make it a bit more fun, but if it's really not gonna wake it up any, I'll keep the 2.73's in and save gas and engine life(lower rpms)

My main question is, how much quicker would a 3.42 make the car in an 1/8th and quarter? And is it worth it...
Leaving at about 2400rpm I was pulling 1.93 60ft (with NO spin) with a sumitomo 285/35/18 and getting an 8.40 at 85mph.
Just feels like a gear will make the car get in to its potential range sooner, thus throwing down a quicker E.T. But after reading in the stickies, its said that with a stall, a gear will only help .1 and 1mph (which im having trouble believing, and hence my questioning).
Its not a race car, nor a DD, but I do like to drive it and am fond of the "better" gas mileage, but am willing to trade in some fuel mileage for some more useable power. If it was a race car or I was rich i'd go with a 4.10 and be done haha
