Default Narrowed 10-bolt?

Thinking about narrowing the stock rear on my daily driver. Before you guys get on my *** about it, I just can't see dropping $2500 into a new 12-bolt for a NEVER raced street car. So I'm not worried about breaking the 10-bolt. Anyone had this done? How much can I expect to fork out for it? I'll pull the rear-end and throw it back in myself....just wondering what the narrowing would run me.

Oh.....and you ask why I'm narrowing it. Simple. I want the 5" lip that my race car has on my grocery-getter, and I found a wheel company that will make me a 17x11 wheel with any backspace I want.

That and OE Wheels' 17x11 ZR1's are back-ordered through December.

Not sure about other shops but I normally charge $150.00 labor to narrow a clean empty housing. You will also have the expense of new axles. I no longer have the tools for the 10-bolt because they were seldom used. Check with Your local chassis shop.

Thanks. I'll ask one of the local shops and see what they say. No chance in narrowing the axles that are already in there is there? I didn't really figure there was but was hoping I could get lucky.

I believe the 10-bolt axles have a necked-down area just inside of the splines, leaving no material to shorten and re-spline them.

Can anyone verify the necked-down area? I talked to Moser...the said they can cut them and respline them as long as long as its not any thinner right inside the current splines.

Pretty sure the stockers are necked down so your best bet is aftermarket. Plenty of sponsors have them but if you want cheap C-Clip axles do a search for Dutchman axles.

Have you thought about using a 3rd gen rear? While not 5" shorter per side, I believe they are about 2" shorter per side.

You could always use axles from a 4x4 s10. They are about 2" shorter per side. Now if you want to go really short I think the regular 2wd s10 axles are 5" shorter per side. Have a shop narrow your rear to fit whatever axle you want to run.

Just checked the 2wd s10 10 bolt is 54.5" flange to flange and the Fbody 10 bolt is 64" so that's 4.75" shorter per side.
