Default Does anyone's 10-bolt pinion seal NOT leak?

What type of pinion seal is best for the GM 10-bolt? I have a 2002 Z28 whose pinion seal leaked from day one. I have my rearend apart now to install 3.73s and I want also to eliminate the leak. Part of my problem is that I can’t see why the original seal leaked – it appears to be undamaged. The replacement seal I purchased (Federal Mogul) is a different design than the original seal. Is some particular type or brand known to be best?

TIA, Gary

You can help it by installing a solid crush collar.I haven't seen one that doesn't leak yet.

The pinion seal on the Z28 leaks. My old car was a 2000 T/A, and the stock seal leaked on that also. I installed 4.10 gears in that car and replaced the pinion seal while I was at it and still leaked. I took it apart again and packed some real thick grease in and around the seal and it made it stop leaking.

Does the pinion seal look like a washer?

You can add my car to the leaky pinion seal group Mine has been leaking for a while, though I had no problems with it for over four years before it started to leak. I plan on getting it fixed this week though - hopefully it wil stay fixed :crossedfingers:

The dealership I brought my car to said it was common and it was called, "sweating." He said it wasn't actually leaking, just sweating. After I thought about it, I've never had a drop of rear end fluid hit the pavement where my car has sat. It just seems to, sweat, I guess.

most leaks are caused by ---1 not lubing seal during install and----- 2 clogged vent in the rear to allow fuid to expand and air to vent when heated... hope this helps

Yup, mine leaked from day one, I had it replaced with my 4.10 install, and it leaks again... My installer was top notch, and it still leaks....

Ahhhh. who cares!

I had a 2000 Z28 w/M6. Mine leaked from day one. When I got my 3.73's put in the installer (Pyle Brothers) recommeded installing a yoke kit also(has a outer seal on it), besides the new pinion seal. Never leaked afterwards.

The Firehawk was leaking when we bought it with 700 miles on it....oh well..already blew that rear...have another 10-bolt in there and are just waiting until we can order a 12 bolt.

The WS6 has never leaked...43,xxx miles now...oh well if it ever does cause it's eventually going to have a 12 bolt too...

mine leaked since day 1, replaced and leaked after that too, I even thought about cleaning the spary of oil off from underneath the car but I notice its working as a pretty good rust inhibitor so I'll let it be for now, lol
