Question Project 3.73 gear install

Im getting ready to install my 3:73 gears in my 94 LT1.. I have just Enuff experience under my belt to where I'm pretty confident in this swap.. The only trouble I might run into is when I have to use the backlash check tool, I'm not experienced with that.. So my mechanic informed me that I make sure I chalk the teeth of the ring an pinion then rotate the rear 1full turn an then check to make sure the teeth are rotating properly.. Any other gear instillation tips out there?

I typically check 'lash'(whatever your 'lash' happens to be at initial setup) at 4 places on the ring gear to verify that there's no 'runout' in/for the assembly due to bad/bent carrier, improperly manufactured/cut gearset,or bent pinion.
Once I know all parts are acceptable,I'll shim/reshim to attain a 'lash' within the gear manufacturers spec range. Then I'll use the 'contact grease' to view contact pattern and adjust(reshim, carrier and/or pinion) as necessary.

for most enthusiasts(recently, more are attempting with success),gears are one of those 'mysteries' best done by those knowledgeable and have the tools.

You have to make drag on the posi as you turn the yoke to ensure a good pattern. A no load pattern is worthless. Just a tip.

Unless you have a lift to do it on, I would take the rear out of the car and do it on jack stands. Its a lot easier than lying on your back. You do need some special tools. Inch pound tourqe wrench, and a press are the main 2 tools I always use. Also use a bearing puller to get carrier, and pinion bearings off. There are other tools that make it a lot easier, but unless you can make them they are expensive. Pinion depth tool, and a case spreader. Here is a link to the last 10 bolt I built. I am getting ready to build another one here in the next week or so.

To check the pattern, I grab the yoke with my hand and with a wrench on a ring gear bolt, I load the gear as hard as I can while rocking it back and forth on about 3 -4 teeth. This loads the coast and drive side and should give you a pretty good pattern.

Getting the crush sleeve right the first time, if you have never done it, can be tricky as well.
