Default Carrier question

I have a stock rear end with a 2 series carrier and 2.73. I'm looking to upgrade to a 3.73 with a new carrier. Can I use a 3 series carrier with a 3 series gear? And is that all I need to change over to a 3 series?

Basically,YES. GM 10 bolt 7.5/7.625 28 spline.

7.5 is the same as 7.625.
a 7.625 rearend has a 7.625 OD ring gear mounted on a 7.5 carrier.
a 7.5 rearend has a 7.5 OD ring gear mounted on a 7.5 carrier.
rearend parts are the same: bearings, seals, shims, etc.

A 2 series gear can't be used with a 3 series carrier,too thick.
'Thick' gears are available in 3.42,3.73,4.10 to use on a 2 series carrier.

Should use a 'master' rebuild kit while you have it apart.

the gears are the same, only the carriers were different, that's why you put a spacer on if you have the 2 series carrier
