Question shimming gears

I was told that i could go from 3.42 to 4.10 without reshimming the rear end. is there any truth to that keeping the same carrier then i would not have to change the shims.

that possibility exists, but highly unlikely. your existing pinion shim and carrier shims could be good with the new gearset, but only a 'pattern check' will/would tell.

does anyone know/remember what it costs to have a shop install and shim gears?

usually around 400 bucks is the going rate sometimes a little higher. you def don't want to skimp on any parts when doing gears, one mistake and you get to throw a set of brand new gears away
