Thumbs down Are my gears toast?

This was a new install and the gears were quiet for the first 500 miles. After getting on it a little it now sounds like this:

And some pictures, not sure if they help.

Nobody will say that vid sounds good. What I don't get is how they could be quiet for 500 mi. and then go bad after you got on it. Once they're broken in and they are quiet they should stay that way. Did the oil level get low?

damn,i dont ever remember seeing that kinda wear on a ring & pinion.....ever.

it looks like grinder marks where the pattern met,or is that just the pic?

looks like something up with the steel that was used or heat treatment?

what brand gear?

Yeah, I'm stumped. I don't know what is a normal amount of wear on a pinion after break-in (establishing pattern). I was kind of surprised with the lip that had developed.

This is the only picture i took before installing it. Got noisy after my first "long" drive. All other drives before that had been relatively short (<30 mins.)

If you did a long highway drive before the gears were broken in that would explain it. The gears generate heat. The faster you go the hotter they and the oil gets while they are in the break-in process. If the oil gets too hot it does not lubricate any more.
My 4.10s generate enough heat that you can't keep your hand on the rear cover long after a highway drive and they are properly broken in.
How many miles were on them when you went for your 'long' drive.

I'm thinking that during my break in period (500 miles) i never got them hot enough to surface temper.....oops. That's the only thing i can figure. Oil level is/was fine but like you said, they probably over heated during that first long drive. I've got the center out now and will be taking it some place for a new ring and pinion.

I ran the car on jack-stands forwards and reverse for 15 mins each, let cool, then did 5 20 minute drives never getting over like 45 with several hours of cool down between. Guessing there's more to it than that?

i dont think you should do all the heat cycles same day,but thats just me......let them totally cool down for best results before heating them up again & so on.

if your putting used gears in then you can go go go......granted there set up right.

To answer you'r question the gears are junk. Who set the gears up? They were set wrong, look at the ring gear pattern. My suggestion would be to find a good rear end shop to set the next set. Doing this yourself would require a real Ford shop manual and some diligence to follow the directions to the letter. The heat cycle thing had nothing to do with this.

The gears were set up by a site sponsor, (will disclose after they have a chance to look things over). I'll be taking it someplace local for the next set.
