Default what to look for in used rearend

Right now I'm faced with needing a rearend rebuild. As an alternative, I am considering buying a used complete rearend. I don't know the guy selling it (friend of a friend type of thing), so I was hoping to get some tips regarding what to look for. The rearend is NOT in a car, as far as I know. Here are my main concerns:

1. Did different year ls1's come with different housings (casting #'s maybe)
2. How do I check for TCS compatibility
3. How do I check for what type of carrier it has
4. Are there any ways to tell if its in good/bad overall condition (bearing play, etc.)?

Anything else I missed?

FYI, the rear will be going into a 1999 Camaro SS A4 TCS/ABS 3.23 car.

Thanks
Jeff

I don't know what you should look for but I have one for sale real cheap after my 9" conversion is done.

I would assume you'd want to know how bad it was beat and if it made noise while they had it on their car.. if the posi was shot etc. Gears you'd want to know and since you have ABS/TCS you'd want that setup as well.
