ATTN SPONSORS: LF Quiet rear end for LS7 Camaro with 4L60e
A friend of mine is looking to replace his factory 3.23 10-bolt due to axle bearing failure.
His primary criteria for finding a rear end are:
He's not a drag racer or a hot rodder. He just likes tinkering with toys and doesn't mind paying for expensive parts if they fit his needs best. It seems his options are to rebuild the 10 bolt, S60, 12 bolt or 9".
I personally only have experience with 10-bolts and Moser 12-bolts. Regardless as to what people claim, every 12-bolt I've heard is noisy. It seems hit or miss with 10-bolts.
He's not looking to set land speed records or withstand launches off a transbrake. What do you guys think the best option is for him?
His primary criteria for finding a rear end are:
- Quiet
- 4-channel ABS
- Highway friendly gears (sub 3.73)

Seems like noise from 9" may be common...

If he doesn't mind spending money, a fabricated 9" from Mwc will be the lightest set up but IMO the best 'bang for the buck' is the s60 through crp. It's heavier but it's damn near invincible and doesn't have a lot of complaints with noise.

Most of the friends that have had them say the same thing. My friend doesn't care about weight, or really even strength (10-bolt was fine). It needs to be quiet. Even a small whine is too much.

The first criteria listed in my original post was that it was quiet. You suggested a rear end that howls. Thanks for all of your help.
Anybody else have feedback on which design(s) are suitable for my friend?

Do you have a lack of reading comprehension by chance? You clearly stated in your "first criteria" that he wouldn't be doing any drag racing. Why would he have any other reason to launch at high rpms? I said mine was perfectly quiet until I launched at high rpms and stressed them.

If the 10 bolt is suitable, why not rebuild or shell out a few hundred for a salvaged unit...I am assuming a spool would be unacceptable, so you might be talking about a $3k rear for a guy that doesn't need one
o
My mwc has a very slight amount of noise with 3.70, you have to listen for it with the windows open...don't see how any rear could get much quieter with bigger than stock gears. .but it is still new.
From my reading on here I'm fairly convinced it's all acrap shoot. If you want quiet above all else buy motive or Yukon gears and have them set by an old timer that gets paid by the hour . and make sure you use a stock torque arm and rubber trans mount.

Aftermarket gearsets are designed for strength and tend to produce some gear whine. No one can guarantee that there won't be a little gear whine. The 9 inch rears tend to be quieter than the 12 bolts. Bob
