Default Race vs. Street Spool??

Ok I'm getting really sick of waiting for Moser to get of its *** and tell me what they are gonna do about the locker I sent them 2.5 weeks ago that prematurly let go on the street, thinking I might just toss a spool in it and be done with it.

I had a buddy tell me I should not get a lightweight race spool, that they are not intended for street use at all and will break from the stress of making turns, he said I would need a street spool.

Looking at summit's website, the only reference I see to a race spool is the strange pro race spool or whatever for like 200 bucks.

Can anyone shed some further light on this..what are you guys with a spool that sees alot of street use using? This will be in my 9" BTW.

Thanks in advance..

Asking because I see a bunch on ebay from parts suppliers for nice prices..

I would not put a spool in a street car on radial tires.

car isn't driven a ton and rides like **** anyway so whatever. just want to make sure i get the right thing so it doens't break from making turns.

I use a steel spool from Moser. I don't drive it everyday but it does see plenty of street miles and I'd rather have a spool than a locker any day. You need to pay attention to axle spline and bearing diameter. Your buddy was probably referencing the aluminum spools--save about 5#'s over a steel spool.

A street spool?? Did I hear that one correct? I've grown up around circle trackers most of my life. They use a spool sometimes, but they stagger the tires and the courses they race on are banked. Where could I see this "street spool."

If you are going to run a spool on the street, just don't get an aluminum spool, any steel spool, lightened or otherwise will be ok. Shoot me an e-mail, I'll hook you up.

As mentioned above a lightened steel spool will be fine if thats what you want. I have a lightened spool and drive a lot with radials, drag radials are pretty annoying, chattering and squeaking going around corners but ET streets or regular radials are fine.

that's interesting..why would drag radials be bad vs regular radials? i only have drag radials now with the new street rims..car won't be on the street too often on the slicks and skinnies anymore, track only for the most part now.

I tried nittos and BFGs, they just really screech and the whole car jerks going around a corner. They just hook a little too well on the street I would guess, the ET streets just shed rubber going around a corner and these turbo techs dont make a sound either.

Its nothing horrible, just annoying with drag radials. Plus these 35 spline axles are a pretty loose fit in the spool so any noise the tires make is amplified like 1000X going around a corner when the tires skip..

makes sense.

well moser just called and said they issuing a credit to Speed Inc for my locker, Detroit covered it. I had tom order a spool instead and am using the difference for other things.

Its not a big deal driving with a spool - just be aware its there and be careful in the rain/hard cornering. Its nice to know you will have at least part in your drivetrain that will never break, that will offset the minor annoyances..
