Default 1995 Trans Am Differential questions

Hello,
I have a 1995 Trans Am, with the factory posi unit in it. I have upgrade to a 4.10 gear but everything else is factory. My posi unit has gone out and only one wheel has power, and I have been looking at upgrading it or just replacing, either or. What would you all recommend for a replacement unit, since there are so many out there to choose from and I Have no expierence with the different brands, I was just looking for some insight from you gurus. Thanks guys.

Im not claiming to be a guru, but i would replace the stock 10 bolt rear. They are weak and liable to break especially if you plan to add more power. from there you can go to a 9" or a 12 bolt which will run you about $2500-$3000. Just my .02 cents

I bet you have a **** ton of miles on that ride. Been flogged it's fair share of times? Not sitting on a mountain of cash to dump needlessly into you ride?

Honestly unless you are drag racing more than driving get the Auburn replacement unit for 3 or 400 dollars will be just fine. Replace you wheel bearings and seals at the same while time adding a diff cover cradle or spend a pile of cash to say you have a 12 bolt.

Well one day she will get a 383 stroker motor, but not at the moment. For the time being, id just like to have my posi unit back which cost about 300-400. A 12 bolt or 9 inch is more like 2500 which i dont have nor need at the moment, thats why i was asking about posi units, but yes will day she will get a better rear end.

speaking of better rearend, in terms of ease of installation, durability, and cost effective, which is best to go with, 9 inch or 12 bolt?

You can buy complete 10 bolts for around 250 bucks. Find one and pull the pan, look for metal and go from there. As far as a 9" and 12 bolt goes. They generally cost about the same except for the fact you need a longer driveshaft for a 9" which will add to the cost. I've heard the 12 bolts are more prone to gear whine after some abuse. http://shop.brutespeed.com/Brute-Spe...nformation.htm

You are indeed correct, the nine inch can handle a lot more power than the 12 bolt can.
