Default How much longer might my rear have (pic included)

So I had a dealership take off my cover and took the attached picture. Tech said he found a bunch of shavings stuck to the magnet and that the bearings were being ground away. He quoted me between $1,200 and $2,400 to fix. For that, I'd rather get a brand new 9". I am just wanting to know if anyone can tell from that picture if it is just a matter of days or I got some time, and did that tech shoot me straight?

If it just looks like fur it's normal. Knowing how many miles it has on it since the last service would help know how "normal".

That's one wide *** quote. "It'll run around this much. Or twice that."

Tech is trying to screw ya'.

That metallic fur is normal for a 10 bolt and means the gears have properly worn in like they should.

^^^ correct. These guys are just trying to sell you up. That is normal buildup of any rearend with a magnet installed to catch the shavings, and unless the rear has excessive noise or leaks to look further into then tell them to just put it back together.

In my case, the rear does whine pretty bad. It is so noticeable on the highway in 6th gear cruising that I have to really raise my voice just to carry on a conversation with a passenger. If this is "normal" noise, then GM really sucks at quality.

60k miles on the rear and it was taken in shortly after purchase to have the ring pinion reset (exact service escapes me but I have paperwork at home). Either way, nothing has been done to it in a while. It hasn't been beat on because I took it out and put a 9" in when I raced and when the racing phase went away, put this back on.

You have noise # 1, #2 if I saw that much metal I would say you got a problem. I worked at gm dealer for a long time like 25 years. I can see a dealer charging 8 hours to overhaul rear times $100 /hr. The one thing is with cover of the only question I would have is wether the axles are bad. I don't know what they cost. So overhaul with parts 1200 at dealer, yes. Plus axles 2400 sounds high and probably don't need. Life of axle, grab yoke of pinion and push up and down. Moves? Game over. Not moving? Some time. Other than that can't tell without seeing. P.s. I bet the pinion bearings are gone. If noise changes on and off gas then good sign those bearings are done.

There you go, bets are on pinion bearings. But I am sure the person making the repair will want to do all the bearings as I would. Yes you should be able to get the job done for less but you need to find someone who does good work. If you wish to continue with the dealer have them explain the varying price better. If it hinges on axles have them POP them out first. And go from there.

Also you almost definetly do not need ring and pinion. If they are not chipped the worst you might get is slight noise but I Dout you will notice.

It's hard to say. My rear has been making noise for 80000 miles. They're such pos that it isn't even worth my time to fix it. If I ever had to remove it to work on it I wouldn't insult my car by putting it back in. I'd just lt it rock until it tanks then fix it the correct way by throwing it away and upgrading.

this looks a like a little too much metal for me. If the rear is making so much noise that you cant have a conversation at highway speed you should probably pull it apart and check. I would say that this wear is normal except you state that there is only 60 thousand miles on it. that would look like normal wear for probably double that amount of miles. Check the pinion seals and axle seals to see if they are leaking. if one of them are I would bet that there is a bad bearing behind it. Hope this helps.
