Can it be done, IRS on a F-Body?

Default Can it be done, IRS on a F-Body?

I am not looking for one or anything, just curious can a IRS setup be done on a F-Body. I don't really have a reason why, just if it can be done. I Know a Ford Rearend Can Bolt up to a F-Body, what is the big difference (if there is a difference) to bolt up an IRS from a Ford?

if you have money anything can be done....but there is no way an irs will bolt up without cutting and welding a while a whole lot to fab it in....independent rears are for handling on the street where you have pot holes and uneven ground while turning...dont bother wasting your time and mine

About 10 or so years ago there was a green Formula fitted with a C4 IRS featured in a mag somewhere. It looked pretty cool.

I know of a third gen with a C4 IRS. I think it would be an interesting project.

I am sure the money to get one of these in is not far from the money to put any other rearend in. An IRS is basically the same as a Solid, so fabricating is not going to be that big of issue if you know what you are doing. It would be even better if GM would of made a F-Body an IRS during its lifespan as an option or something.

why would you want irs anyway? look at the new cobra's...they cant launch for crap on the irs..and it would cost an arm and a leg just to have the swap done..sounds like a huge waste of time and effort to me?

C4 units use something similar to mini driveshafts from the center section to each wheel. Looks pretty beefy.

I don't know where you have been but IRS on a cobra is not a new thing. They have building them and proving the IRS for years. Now that Ford is finally make some real horsepower cheaply, it is making everybody scared. Launching one just take skill, have you ever drove a powerful '03+ Cobra? Probably not, and I don't think it would be a waste of time especially to have something different from the rest.

A lot of people are breaking the stock IRS in 03 Cobra's once they put the KB blower on there and some good tires.

A lot of people do the solid axle conversion in them. I know of several myself.

600-700 rwhp + stock IRS = BOOOOOOM or not as much traction, or both


And I believe Cobras have been IRS since 2001 if I am not mistaken....

I seen them blow them to pieces too (strip the axle ends off mostly). That is going to happen with a stock IRS with 600-700 HP. Try 600-700 HP on a Stock 10-Bolt or even a Solid 8.8. Can I say bye-bye.
1999 was the 1st year for the IRS in Cobras also.
Damn now, I am just trying to find people who are interested in this setup. Don't bash something that can actually work.

I agree that IRS is a great setup....just not for drag racing. I hate a solid axle in daily driving and twisties compared to an IRS...a lot of disadvantages to the solid in those circumstances....

if you arent doing crazy auto x road racing everyday it wont be worth it when you want to take someone from dig as someone said on here before the nascar guiys use the solids going 180 at turns and they dont let loose unless you go and give it a shove out the window with ur fist ....get a good 4 link in it and it will hook if you do want the conversion all is well but be prepared for pros and cons as anyhting...basically get what you need for the type of driving you will be doing most

I did this 15 years ago to my 84 Z-28 . I put a 85 Corvette IRS and frame rails under it . Lots of work , lost the rear seat, and had to install a 6 point roll cage. Looks real cool , hooked up real good at the drag strip , much smoother ride but any improvement in handeling was negligable. What surprised me the most was how the dana 36 with 3.07 gears held up to the abuse, it ran 12.408 at 111.39 with a 1.8 60 ft. I street raced it and generally beat the **** outa it for 5 years without any problems. Unless you got lots of money to blow or just gotta be different it just aint worth it. Stan

IRS would be awesome. Just depends on what you want to do. A well set up solid on a smooth road surface is just as good as an IRS but when it gets bumpy thats where the IRS steps up. Lots of work maybe, but if you like doing that kind of work then i guess it would be a fun project. I say go for it, as long as you are for sure of your goals. 2k plus for a good solid!!! thats a lot of flow to find used parts from a salvage yard to peice together your own IRS if you do the work yourself. Whatever cranks your tractor chief!!
