Default Help me identify this 9" rearend

Hey Guys,

Been a while since I have been on but I recently got another 02 Camaro and I just picked up a 9" Ford rearend off of craigslist here in St. Louis. OK, before anyone flames me, I got screwed!!!!! I know this now but didn't at the time I bought it. I gave $1400 for it complete. Now the question I have is what the hell rear is it? Currie, strange moser????? The seller told me it was a Currie rear with a strange center diff. Upon closer inspection after I got it home I cannot find any markings to corroborate what he says. Now of course he isn't returning my calls or txts. Here are some pics, thoughts on what it is? The torque arm bracket might be a give away. The moser one has 3 mounting points while this one has only 2 with a bracket already installed.
Thanks, dean

The center section looks to be a stock Ford center, not even the stronger dual web everyone looks for. I don't recognize the housing.

Take a pic of the axle flange, does it have a mfg's name on it?

Added one of the axle. No mfg name. Has 08-09-11 stamped on the end. 31 spline axles

The axles must be aftermarket to have that late of a date on them and be 31-spline.

When You pull the center section look closely at the rear pinion support for cracks, that is the weak point of the stock 9" center section.

That looks like a Currie housing to me with the two bolt torque arm adapter. I have seen some posts of Curries' torque arm adapter tearing at the small radius corners so be mindful. For $1400 I don't think you did too bad.

I don't think you got screwed. It looks like a Currie with the better tapered axle bearings. Like Carl said the weakest link will be the stock cast center section but I run one as well and have had no issues.

I dont think 1400$ is that bad. It does look like the Currie setup though.

I paid 1700$ for my Moser 9 with 31 spline and strange center with a locker.

There is a guy in Fenton Missouri that builds those. His name is Danny Miller. I would bet it his rear. His website is reargears.com or something. Probably buys the mount from currie.

Ya know, I think you are right on this one. I have found clues of this being his type of rearend.

Yep, I have learned that they are Moser axles.......how much power you making with the stock center and do you launch it on slicks?

Stock 9 inch case can not take alot, the snub part of the pinion will crack the case. If you plan on launching on slicks with a m6 then I would highly recommend at diffrent case. Also the pinion support in the pic is Identical I got from Danny miller.

I am making 440/450 to the tire. This is not a drag race car, I run R-comp road race tires which are pretty sticky but have a stiff sidewall. Also the car is a 6 speed with 4:10's. I think for a street car on modest power, a stock center is fine. It's still miles ahead in strength than a factory GM 10 bolt.

I checked theirs out and it looks like their torque arm mounts are different.

And just when I was feeling good about it! What did they do? Cut the axles shorter?

If you plan on doing any serious drag racing on slicks I would suggest getting an aftermarket center section now to replace the Ford unit. I ran the Ford OEM center for many years with my auto. With my current setup and a T56 trans on ET streets I grenaded the center a few months back. I didn't notice if your car is an A4 or M6 but I would imagine an auto car wouldn't be much of an issue but the shock of a M6 seems to break the OEM Ford units.. Here are some pics of mine.

OK, here is what I have determined so far that I have in the rear:

It is a Currie housing with Currie torque arm bracket.

The pinion support is a Ford Daytona support pinion, based on it's cutting marks around the bolt holes.

The 9" center case is a 1967 Ford Galaxie case with C7AW-G stamped in it. Not a nodular case. But does have the 3.06 bigger bearings.

The axles are 31 spline moser axles with Timken A20 tapered bearings and seals.

The carrier is an Detroit Eaton TrueTrac posi unit, looks to be new. 4:11 gears

I will have to replace one of the axle seals as it has been torn, I guess when the guy took it our or whenever. Not a big deal....

I'm just sharing what I found in case someone finds this thread in the future and it might be useful to them.

Overall I'm happy with the rear. Haven't installed it yet but my plans are to have the case painted and I'm also going to go ahead and by a Strange pro nodular center case and install it. If I'm doing this I am going to do it where I will not have any worries once I'm done!.

When finished, with the Strange center case, I expect to have about $1800 total in it....not too bad I guess. I've seen them sell for a lot more.

Thanks to everyone who replied, much appreciated!!!!!!

I agree! Mine is an auto. I'm getting the Strange pro nodular center case.
