Default 8.8 vs 12 bolt

What is the difference in price and strength between the 2? Bolt in, ready to go with a 3.73 gear? I don't think I need a 9" or S60 at this point. Looking for a cheap, 10 sec capable rear.

S60 is stronger and less cost than the 12 bolt. Strange has a great promo right now on their complete rearends that ends on the 1st so I would get in on it while you can!

8.8 requires a lot of custom work and by the time you get done will not be any less cost, and a whole lot more effort. FWIW the 8.8 is no stronger than the 12 bolt, they use the same bearings even.

I think if I needed the strength of an S60 I would just go with a 9" for the gear selection. Right now I'm looking at a cheaper alternative. I'm still trying to figure out my direction so a 9" isn't out of the question.

A 9" can be fabbed by yourself easier than a 8.8. The only reason I went with Moser or anyone else in the past was to retain ABS and or Traction control. After seeing how my 12 bolt Moser retains the reluctor I will build my own 9"s in the future. If you order one new, I would purchase it in parts and do the gear set up yourself. That's just from my experience with Moser but I did buy that one used.

I chose a 12 bolt for a few reasons. 1. When built right its a damn strong rear end that I won't outgrow 2. Very close to factory fit 3. Less parasitic loss then other rear ends 4. Competitive price when keeping points 1-3 in mind. I chose Strange because of their proven track record, and I think their torque arm mount is better then Mosers.

The only outlet I know of for a complete F-Body 8.8 is Hawks and it's as much or more than a 12-bolt or S60. The advantage of the 8.8 is you can start with an Exploder or Ranger rear from the boneyard and you have a cheap, strong housing and 31-spline carrier but as was mentioned, it requires a lot of custom work and fabrication skills. The TA mount is the stickler. If you're looking for a bolt-in option your best bet for an M6 car is the S60 or Strange 12-bolt but since you have an auto trans you could probably get by with the Moser 12-bolt.

Roughly how many passes you got on that bad boy? Whats the average 60ft and 1/4 mile time your car runs?

Dude, nice passes! My car is close to yours w/o the 12 bolt but you are a few tenths faster. I like seeing someone else using the 12 bolt for autos, makes me see that that is enough of a rear for my set-up. I was gonna go for the s60 but everyone tells me its overkill and will slow me down, I dont know.. Anyway nice ride you have there and I like reading your posts.

Thanks buddy. The idea is to go fast reliably. Why go heavier then you have to? Why bring in more parasitic loss then you have to. There is a reason the fastest cars spend mucho $$ to lighten drivetrain components and reduce drag. We all know we want to replace a part and never touch it again, but you're betting the odds.....but the wrong way. Example, I could have selected a stamped 9 inch for about the same money. All else the same, my car would have been slower EVERY single pass from here on out and the reason Im willing to give that up is because I believe if I install a 12 bolt WILL break. That's a heck of a long card to play! If the odds are maybe, or slim, go with the lighter stuff when possible. Another thing that annoys me is 9 inch rears with 31 spline axles.....can you say counter-productive! Big parasitic gearset, weak carrier and axles....you're no better then a fresh built 10 bolt!!! except slower

Cool.....I've been so lucky all these years running 11's on the 10 bolt that a 12 bolt should be plenty strong for me!

10 bolts are very under-rated behind autos. Generally, they can handle quite a lot of abuse. I just changed for piece of mind but my 10 bolt wasnt showing any signs of failing.

I do have a buddy that is giving a 12 bolt hell with a nitrous grudge car. I just hate to buy things twice. If I go twin turbo down the road I think I will need a 9". I have also found a couple guys out there that will build a bolt-in 8.8, just not sure the cost.

01red, your posi is still working as designed? Any noise?

The Tru-trac works perfect. So far so good, zero complaints.

Looks like a strange 12 bolt is the way to go. Unless I get a 9".
