Default buying used gears

Need to change the gears in my rear end because I'm turbo and the 3.73s are a bit much. Going to a 3.42/3.23 setup. Now I have a new gear install kit with a solid pinion spacer and that's about the most I wanna spend on this 10 bolt so instead of wasting money on new gears I was going to look for a used set. So I found a set that whines very slightly that you can barely hear it. IF I set it up will the whine still be there as in its wore into the gears and no matter what I do it will still whine? Would I be better just buying new gears? Like I said this is a 10 bolt so it won't be there for long. Just wanna get my project done and on the road then upgrade come summer.

Scott whine can come from a host of different things. Worn bearings, improper pattern etc. I had a set in my old fox that were quiet in my buddies car and stoopid loud in mine. As long as the pattern looks ok and the bearings are new, or in good shape, you measure backlash etc you'll be fine for now. On the other hand QP has housings and axles for our cars dirt cheap. You can also get a used center section on ebay from a nascar team for dirt cheap. That makes a strong case for a 9" for under 1650 shipped.

The rear end has to stay for now. Will it stay forever no, but since it's mainly just street driven and highway rolls it should be fine for now. If it breaks before then, then I will switch but I have too much money already into the setup
