Got it in and went and made my first heat cycle and it's already whining. Gear whine is something that I just cannot deal with.

Well I thought you were good to go. Could it be the old 'Richmonds are noisey' thing? Looking at your pics and knowing they're noisey, maybe try a thicker pinion support shim. What do you think?

Richmonds are noisy. That pattern is fine.

If this set does not end up right I will only purchase a factory set of gears. This is aggravating. 400 bucks into 2 gear sets. Still have the other set for sale btw if anyone is looking for a brand new set of 4.11s. They have not been used.

I know exactly what you are going thru . I still do not have mine corrected . I am beginning to believe that these after market gear sets give a false pattern . I think this may be the reason so many have a problem with gear noise with aftermarket gears . I am waiting for a pinion tool to see what mine is setting at and compare it with the gear pattern. Mine had a good pattern also . Heres my thread if you haven't seen it . Good luck

Yes. I've read your thread. Hope you get yours straightened out as well. My thing is, company's should know that gear whine is a huge ordeal to the aftermarket world. It's very crucial to a street driven car and it's build. So why can't you make a gear set that's cut like factory to help reduce it. Yeah I know aftermarket is cut for strength but really how many incidents do you hear of gears exploding. Yes it's happened but not to common.

Motive blue box is cut like stock and very quiet and forgiving of setup in my experience. What you're suggesting doesn't really exist does exist. Not real sure of the delimma here.

Okay I will have to remember about the motives then. I was unaware that they had a stock cut gear. After searching on motives it seems 50/50 on blue/orange. Some say blue box makes more noise and others say or age box makes more noise. I seen a few post from you 01ssred where u said the sets of blue box motives were quiet that you set up.

Says right on the side of the box. Blue says stock ring and pinion, orange box says performance ring and pinion. I've setup a bunch of both. Part numbers for blue box start with GM and orange box start with G8......Good luck.

And SLP/AAM/GM are all the same thing and stock quality gears, I also really think Richmond has a "street" series gear out as well.

What steve said. Performance gears will make noise period. The way they are cut along with other metallurgy factors make them whine a little. As long as its on coast then its pretty much ok. The orange motives even say right on the box "some gear noise is expected" the richmonds are just known to be noisy.

slp/aam/gm are all oem sets and will be dead quiet and are available in a 4.10 ratio. yukon is another good gear set that is supposed to be very quiet so those are worth a look as well as the motive blue box.

The whining is on acc. It goes dead quiet on coast or coming to a stop.
