Default Safe to paint driveshaft?

Is it safe to paint a driveshaft in regards to balance. I'm not sure exactly how much change is requires to throw things off. I am getting a new strange driveshaft and was thinking of hitting it with a scotchbright lightly then spray painting it.

Any good way to mask the moving parts (bushing/roller)

I gave my Strange 3" cromo ds a light coat of rattle can lacquer to keep rust away, IMO you'll be okay. I painted the yokes and u-joints but stayed away from the yoke/oil seal area, I might've used masking tape but I don't remember.
