replacing just differential and keeping ring gear ??
this is on my truck, 2006 2500hd, 90k miles, has 11.5" AAM axle with the gm g80 gov-lock differential. i want to replace just the differential with a detroit truetrac.
before you say do it right and put a new ring & pinion in,
can it be done and if so what are the things to watch out for or not assume?
The differential is $900 from summit, I'm contemplating if this is something i can do myself and put my oem ring gear onto the truetrac and reinstall it such that i don't need to re-shim for backspace and worry about getting gear pattern correct. otherwise to need a new ring & pinion which means i'm looking at a full axle rebuild around $2000+ to have a shop do it, and that's too much for what basically works fine now it just doesn't lock both wheels.

The gears don't need to be replaced if they aren't damaged. However, not measuring and being prepared (knowledge plus tools) to reshim at minimum the carrier is a fools bet. Assume it won't be the same with the new posi because it probably won't be.
