Default 4.30 gears

Anyone running 4.30 gears in a M6, mostly street car,, I might see the track 2-3 times a year.

Just wondering how you find it around town driving?

Had them forever in my 89 RS with the 6.0 swap and a carb. Got just over 20 MPG without EFI and I daily drove it. Was worth it every day and when you let it rip at the track, wheels up all motor.

4.10s/4.11s IMO are the min for these cars from bolt-ons up to aggressive heads/cam setups and even larger cubed N/A builds. Ive ran 4.10s in the 10 bolt, 4.30s in my M9, and now 4.57s. Ive loved em all and every time I stepped up to a steeper gear I've always been happy with the results.

I've got a set of 3.90s in my car now, I have a new set of 4.30s ready to go in the car if I want to put them in. With a 26" tire, it gives me 118mph out on the back end, 125?ish with a 28". I didn't notice much change from the 3.42s to 3.90s at all, but I imagine first gear would be completely useless with 4.30s on the street.

I had 4.30s in last year and rode around with my hoosiers on the whole time. 1 gear wasnt useless. Did just fine. Roll a 5-10 mph roll she was getting outta there. From a dig it would spin for a sec or 2 and leave out. I don't think you would be disappointed if you put them in there.

I feel the same about the 3:90s. For my set up they were useless. I wish I went to 4:56 but I know they are like glass in the 10 bolt.

Good thread. I'm debating on what gears to run in the 8.8 I'm going to be getting here soon. I was thinking 4.10's, as the donor can be found with those gears, but the more and more I've been reading, I'm thinking 4.30's may be the way to go.

I find myself being torn on what gears I want. Do I go with what makes peak power when I trap or do I pick the best gear for cruising around?

I run 4.10's on my M6 HCI LQ9 and to me it's perfect on the street n/a (not so perfect on a 125 shot though lol) but if it was mainly a track car i'd much prefer 4.30's

So the higher the gear, the higher the trap speed, or do I have it *** backwards?

I look at it this way... If my cam makes power to 7000 then I want to go through the traps at that or a tad higher. So then I need to know what mph the car is currently trapping at too. Now I can pick what gear to go with. I worry about running out of gear in 4th and don't wanna worry about changing my tire height.

Does that sound about right?

My car makes power to 7000, which is where I will shift at one I upgrade the fuel pump. Now, the rev limiter is set at 6800 rpm's, so on my dyno runs, I took it right to 6600/6700. Car was still making power. Currently I have a 26" tall tire, but am not at all opposed to going with a 28" tire. Rear HAS to be replaced, first and foremost. 8.8 with whatever gears I decide on will be what I do. I will try to find an 8.8 with 4.10's already in it so I can see how I like it, and then change.from there. Seems logical.

What does your car trap now?

You know if you want to get rid of that rear, I'm all in.

4.10s max trap with 7K RPM is 131mph with a 26" tire. 4.30s is around 125mph. If you're trapping more than 125, you either need 4.10s or a 28" tire. At which point, 4.56 and a 28" tire would give you about 128.

If you ever plan to run nitrous in your car, you're going to be right around 130+ depending on how strong the H/C package in the quarter and what you weigh. So the 4.30s and 28s might be smart and gives you around 135mph at a 7K redline.

Lol, you know you are not the first to try and get ahold of this 8.8 since buying it.

I should have mentioned that the track i'll be racing at is 1/8, I'll be running a 26" tire. I rev the car to 6800rpm, Like someone mentioned above, I want the car to be close as possible to peak power when nearing the traps.

Pervious track was 1/4, car trap 120 with 3.90, I cant remember the actual rpm as I crossed the line, but it wasn't above 6400rpm.

Ah, in that case, get as much gear in there as you can.
