Default 8.8 with LS1 brakes

Has anyone used the LS1 rear brakes on an 8.8 ??? I would like to use the long axle on both sides. Using the two long axles would narrow the rear end 3". That said it has the Ford Explorer tube ends. I am not sure what to do about my brakes. Thanks, David

Mine had the explorer axles cut off, the 10 bolt axle tubes slid in and welded. So that is one answer.

Yeah, what he said. If you do a 8.8/10 bolt "hybrid", you're just using the 8.8 center section, and keeping the 10 bolt axle tubes, so the backing plates and brakes work just like they would on a stock 10 bolt.

ZONE89RS.....

Are you using the small ten bolt wheel bearing. My 31 spline will not slide through the 10 bolt wheel bearing.

Sorry guys.... I am lost on this one. Thanks for your help.

Where did you get this 8.8 from? There is a guy named Josh that makes them that are100% bolt in ready and accept the stock brakes. He welds on the 10 bolt axle tubes and he puts in custom 31 spline axles. Curious if it's one of his.

My 8.8 is out of a 2000 Exploder. It is a 31 spline set up. I was trying to lengthen the passenger side to the same as the driver side. Now I find out my LS1 brakes will not fit. So should I just cut the ends and replace them ones that will accept 31 spline bearings and LS1 backing plates ??

Thanks again for your time.

You should just get some moser axles made for it. They do it all the time evidently.

So you are trying to make an unmodified 8.8 out of an explorer work on a f-body? Yeah, that won't work. You'd be best off to cut off the 8.8 axle tubes and weld on your 10 bolt axle tubes and then get custom lenght 31 spline axles. Then, your backing plates and brakes will work just fine. If you have FB, checkout TNT fabrication. He is going to be doing my 8.8.

OP, there's also several 8.8 write-ups on here from guys who have done one on their own. May want to check those out. I hope you get it all figured out. If you can, post up some pictures of the rear.

I have read many write-ups here but I cannot find the answer I am looking for. I would like to know if anyone makes axle ends that I can put on the 8.8 and use my LS1 rear brakes. Thanks for your help.

I wish I knew if they do or not, but I really don't know.

I used a mustang 8.8.

replaced the axles with 31 spline Moser axles and used a welded explorer diff. Redrilled the rotors/axles for the 5 x 4.75 bolt pattern and used the mustang rotors/calipers. Cost me the $200 for the 8.8, $270 for axles and 25 for brackets. Was in it about $500.

Hey Guys,

I spoke with Josh at TNT Fabrication. Great guy to deal with. I will be sending him my 8.8 and 10 bolt tubes for him to set up. Thanks to everyone for offering suggestions, it was a great help.

Pretty sure you can if you get the right adapter. Josh can give you the part number you'll need.
