Default Rear end loud whining noise from a stock 10 bolt

I did about 8-12 races last night including a couple of dig races and rolls with other people I was racing and all of sudden I hear a loud whining noise around 35-45 MPH really loud. (just a brief history on my car, the body has 324K miles and the engine around 100K or less.) and it's annoying driving with this noise, and at first I thought it was my tires but I was doing some research that it could be the actual gearing of the rear end. The car is a '99 Trans Am A4 2:73 Gears. Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely the gear is done. I would pull it apart and rebuild it, soon.

Put the car on jack stands in the rear, block the front tires, start the car and put it into drive and see if you can pin point it.

Have a friend give it some gas, not too much and listen for any noise..

If it's coming directly from the rear end you should notice it pretty easily since it's either that or wheel/brakes/e-brake cable..

Yea. My assesment is worst case. But with the miles you have in it. Its probably the gear. You can do the jack stand sound test but it may not make the noise because there is no load now on the gear. I would check the fluid. If you can check to see if there is metal in it. Even metal powder from wear. The gear can look ok to the untrained eye. Even i cant always tell when they are bad. I have a buddy that builds pro level race cars that takes care of ours. You can get the gears and bearings yourself To save money. Most guys will set the gear up for about 150.00

Just buy a used rear end for $200

I always come across them, gear swaps in 10 bolts are a waste of money these days

Agreed, 2.73 rears get thrown away around here. Just find a used one on craigslist.

Hey everyone,

I'm sorry for the late response. I took out the busted 2:73 gears and I was turning the yoke from right to left and you can hear a loud bang when I was moving it with my hand. I just upgraded to 3:42 gears from a '02 Camaro SS M6, and my godness, it's so quiet plus it picks up a lot quicker then it did before.

The 2:73 10 bolt needed fluid, was leaking fluid if you look at the torque arm closely. Plus, it was in horrible condition. The new rear end has been on since Sunday night.
