Default Clunk - Clunk - Clunk....stock 10 bolt differential

2002 V6 Firebird car is used to drive to High School and cruse around, so no power added or racing, we do not need a rear end that can Handel 1000 hp...lol

The bonk, or clunk just started, it increases with RPM/speed and it present in reverse also.

Thought it was the U joints but after removing the drive shaft and then checking the gear oil both were fine. I could grab the yoke and turn it and it has a spot that feels like it binds. Where the yoke area enters the differential it looks to be seeping a bit.

Plan on pulling the cover tomorrow and draining so we can take look at the gears, sadly we are very inexperanced with this and unless we can see some broken teeth not sure what to look for.

Any advise, options, ideas are appreciated.

Chances are very good that a thorough visual inspection will reveal the issue.

Yea once you pop the cover issue should be pretty obvious, especially if you're sure the sound is coming from the diff.

Ok the small 8mm bolt that goes into the pin that holds the axels in had backed out a little. So the pin was a little chewed and a small chip out of the pinion gear.

The little bolt looks to be broken off about 25 mm past its threads. At first I tightened it back in and the pin moved down to where it is supposed to be, which would not hit the pion gears.

Not sure how long the little bolt should be and if there is some left in the pin...

Does the little bolt go all the way through the pin? We are going to try to get the pin out and see, there was not a lot of shavings anywhere so we are trying to figure out where the chipped piece of the pinion gear went........might still be in there as we cannot turn the big ring around without a bind.

Thank you for your help.

Default Pin Bolt Broke

After watching some videos it looks like the bolt is defiantly broke off in the pin, still trying to figure out how to get the pin out so we can look for a new bolt somewhere.

I just found this lock pin bolt extractor kit, didn't even know it existed. All positive reviews.

Most auto parts stores carry the lock pin bolt in stock, buy one so you can compare to what you have to see if/how bad yours is broke.

WOW thanks for the info!

Yep ours is broke, no way to get the pin out that we can see. The pin end is pretty chewed up. And the carrier looks to be pretty deformed at the pin end.

Found a rear end in a bone yard might go that route.
