Rear end noob needs help.
I've searched and couldn't find what I was looking for. My car has 2.73 gears in it so that makes it a 2 series carrier I think. I was wondering if I could changed the whole differential to a 3 series without getting a new rear end housing?

1st,what kind of car ? if you're discussing a 93-02 Camaro/Firebird with factory OEM 7.5/7.625 rearend,the following applies.
2.73s' indicates you have an automatic. Yes,273s' are on a 2 series carrier. NO,you don't have to change the entire rearend housing. You can use what are termed 'thick gears' of 3.42,3.73,4.10 ratio for that 2 series carrier. A 7.5/7.625 3 series carrier can be used in that housing just as GM did. Ratios available for 3 series carriers are 3.23,3.42,3.73,3.90,4.10,4.30,4.56.
GM used Auburn cone clutch posi carriers to 1998,Torsen carriers from 1999 to 2002. Other manufacturers, such as Eaton, also make 3 series carriers.
