upgrading differential, ok to reuse ring & pinion gear set?
My 2500hd truck, the G80 differential no longer locks.
I am considering getting an Eaton detroit truetrac.
the truck is a 2006, just turned 100k miles. Has no drive train problems other than the now open differential, the rear axle is quiet and does not leak any oil.
It has an AAM 11.5" rear axle with a 4.10 gear.
The truetrac differential is over $800 from summit.
I priced a new ring & pinion set having AAM part number 40094550 and described as an OEM gear set for around $386; this is cheap compared to others for same part # ranging up to $550 and other 11.5" gear sets with 4.10 ratio up to $800.
Being a 10 year old truck I'm hesitant to drop this kind of money into it, especially if i don't have to. But it is far from a p.o.s. and I don't plan on getting rid of it any time soon...
If I do decide to get a truetrac installed and it would be by a shop,
what is the yes/no consensus on keeping the existing ring and pinion gear set?
can I save money by reusing the existing gear set?
do i have better odds of a shop doing the job better... resulting in a quiet rear end... by not touching the pinion and only replacing the differential and swapping my existing ring gear to it?
