Default Rear end adjustment.

Just installed my new 4.10 gear. Have 500 Mike break in period finished. About 470 miles in it developed whine on throttle from 45-60mph. Took apart, checked backlash, it dropped to bout .005. I thought I had it at .008. But I could have made it too tight. Anyways. Pattern showed too far to the outside of the gear, and too big on the tooth. Both on drive side. My question is, is this adjusted by the carrier shims, or is it adjusted by the pinion depth? It may be possible I over tightened the pinion preload also. Would that be a possible cause?

Meant to say the pattern was higher than I wanted on the tooth. Not as down in the valley of the gear. I know there are specific terms, I can't remember right this second

Generally speaking pinion shims adjust pattern and carrier shims adjust backlash.
