Default Gear pattern help, please! 3.73 Motive 10 bolt

Setting up 3.73 Motive orange box in my ten bolt. Started with .035 pinion shim, .006 backlash, thought pattern was good, noisy accel only, coast quiet, 50-70 mph (60-65 the worst).

Changed backlash to .008/9, same exact noise.

Went to .030 pinion shim, .008/9 backlash, same exact noise, but mph range increasing 45-70+ but a little quieter 62-63.

I got the tool from Ratech and used the digital caliper gauge and determined I need a .038 pinion shim and it is about .006 backlash and here are the pics. The pattern is odd but the gears now have about 600 miles on them.

The first five are drive the next five coast. Thanks in advance!!

The coast side looked a little shallow according to the USA Standard Gear guide so I went .040 on the pinion shim and .006/7 backlash

First two drive, second two coast. Coast looks a little washed out, maybe that means good contact? The drive looks deeper in the pics, looks more centered in real life, hard to tell what the camera gets better and what it skews.

Mike , I see you are working on a 10 bolt . Unfortunately I dont thing you will get these gears to be any better . One thing is you already have to many miles on them to be changing the wear pattern on that gear set . I would cut my losses and order you a set of AAM ( oem ) gears for that 10 bolt if you are dead set on getting a quiet set of gears . Every AAM gear set I have set up was dead quiet . That orange box gear set is mostly a miss in the quiet department . I have talked to the engineers at AAM for what they like to see in the there pattern to learn there gears and sent them pictures and they had me make a couple slight changes and the pattern even got better. So if you do go this way AAM engineers was great to work with is you need a little help .

Just a suggestion , Hope thing work out for you .

I think around 20-25 inch #, has some drag but not too tight. I haven't seen AAM gears, who sells them? If this doesn't get quiet, I'm putting my s10 gears back in, they were not bad in comparison.

Those say no longer available. I saw rock auto has Dorman and Dana, how are those?

I ran the above pattern and it makes the same noise at the same speed, although a little less range, now like 55-65. Funny thing is I researched before buying and everyone said Motive are quiet, I guess they meant the blue box.

Also I do have some carrier preload too, same as with other gears that were almost quiet.

You give up to easy . There are not discontinued they just say out of stock. Take the part # and do a search and you will find another supplier or two .

Ha, no just a little distraught right now. I've put more hours into this gear swap than my last engine swap and I'm burnt out! I do appreciate the help though!
