There were S10's that came with it. After 93, higher option models etc DID come with the 8.5. It's the preferred axle for S10 V8 swaps. I do think if the f cars had the 8.5, the T56 clutch hamstring could have been left undone.

Are you saying that the clutch installed was intentionally weak in order to help safeguard the 7.5?

My clutch has significant slip at 30K.

Yes, it was. Sort of an 11th hour thing.

---"Oh, ****, the T56 is breaking our ten bolts, but we've got a zillion of these things already coming, so what do we do?"

---"I've got it, lets put a restrictor orifice in the clutch line to slow down the fluid flow so the driver can only hit the driveline so hard"

---"great idea, but what about the crud that builds up in the line at the orifice and eventually chokes it off?"

---"We'll deal with that if it happens. It's either that or we eat all these axles"

So, there are two things. The orifice in the clutch line - hence the "drill mod" to get rid of that orifice. The other thing is that self-adjuster mechanism, which softens over time, weakening the pressure plate. When it gets bad enough, the pedal starts randomly coming up half way, etc. Typically, the solution ends up being an aftermarket clutch without the adjuster AND an aftermarket master cylinder.

And eventually a better axle

Lol. Yeah, I've noticed the pattern around here. Have my Monster and Tick in my garage waiting. NTO5R's already on.

And I plan to uh, eventually get a better axle. I'll be the 167,584th guy to see how long my 10 bolt can live with drive line snapping mods.

Just make sure you start a thread asking how long your 10-bolt will last

Where did drunk guy go? I'm curious!

I actually laughed out loud at that. If I did start a thread it would only be like the 153,793rd so no biggy.

Without a full spool if a broken ring/pinion teeth inside can cause the axle to lockup at speed. That is the only thing that worries me about using a more efficient *weaker* ring/pinion axle, that broken ring/pinion teeth could cause it to lockup at speed. But with a full spool usually there's room for all the broken pieces to float around inside.

That's actually a good point and something that has crossed my mind as well. Teeth/lockup thing.

only the s10 zr2 pickup and blazer came with this rear. The rear was the same as the standard 1500 series rear, hence the need for the fender flares. It was wider and heavier and gave no real life advantage that I have ever found in the s10. I currently have both trucks sitting in my driveway and the zr2 is a Pig on gas....😠....

^ Actually the Blazer Xtreme's also were available with a 8.5" on the standard s10 width with disc brakes and 3.42 gears

Curious to see the OP's venture into this as well. I have been debating on trying something similar starting with one of our bolt on mounts for our TAS systems for first and second gen f-bodies

that looks like a good approach vs putting the strain on the pinion housing.

Two things that I did not want to know. 1 - that they put an 8.5 on a effing blazer and not on a 300+HP performance car. 2 - that whatever that BMR thing is exists. Now I'm curious have to go figure out what it is and how it works.

I know. It still baffles me that they decided an appearance and handling packed S10 blazer was more deserving of a good rear end than their sport cars. I could understand the v6 cars coming with a 7.5, but the v8 cars? Come on GM....

Anyways, as for the piece I posted, it is part of our Torque Arm Conversion kit we make for the First and Second gen f-bodies and Novas. More can be found on them here:

Or at the VERY least on the T56 cars. I think they must have underestimated how much that T56 transfers to the rear
