First time setting up gears, whining. Gears ruined?
The other day I decided I'd take a crack at installing a set of gears myself. Motive 3.90 orange box. Everything went rather smooth, gear pattern looked ok with marking compound, backlash set dead on ***** at .008". Slight whined on decel around 30-40mph. So I went and took it apart again, noticed the pinion was out too far, drive side pattern too close to heel, added a shim, and did my best to get everything back together. Whine got worse, and is now present at almost all speeds on decel.
I've only driven this car maybe thirty miles since I put them in. How long does it take for them to wear in wrong and whine forever? I'd like to take it all apart a 3rd time, install new bearings and seals instead of reusing old ****. Maybe try to get it right this time. But I'm not gonna waste my time if the gears are shot.

I've just finished resetting my new Motive blue box ring and pinion a third time for whine. This time it's ALMOST gone and I had driven close to 100 miles prior to today's rehash. But in those 100 miles the speed was below 45 and done 17 miles at a time to work and back home.
I would try again - you really have nothing to loose but the gear oil and the noise. A tip on the noise - if the noise changes as load changes it is likely the preload on the bearings is wrong - at least that has been my (limited) experience so far.

I thought I read the Orange box Motive are very prone to whine but I cannot confirm with personal experience. I would go back to the quieter shim. The pattern in relation to the root/face of the tooth is more important that the heel/toe of the gear. Post up a picture of the pattern.
It's a flip of the coin if they will quiet down on the previous setting.
