Default 4.10's in an AUTO.. gains? top speed?

I was just wondering if it was a bad thing to put 4.10 gears int he stock 10 bolt on my A4? What kind of improvement would i see on my track times coming from my 3.42's? and around what would my top speed be with them? Anyone have them in their auto? Let me know how ya run and what your top speed is(estimate).. Thanks for any help!

dont run them unless you NEED to run them. you wont gain much ET or mph at all with them. you need a bigger convertor to go faster. a bigger gear is only when you are starting to look for 1) 6700+ rpm traps in 3rd gear or 2) 28" tire or larger.

top speed depends on tire diameter and rpm. i would say assuming the same traction you are looking at a .1 second ET and 1.5 mph increase in traps over yours now. also bad highway rpms. 80 mph = 3000 rpms.

i have never seen an A4 w/ 4.10s at the track, but i drove my buddy's '01 WS6 (A4) after he installed 4.10s, before his M6 swap... and let me tell you, it pulled VERY hard!
he had 330 rwhp, and it felt like it pulled harder than my WS6 (M6/343 rwhp) with 3.73s

I wouldnt do it if you plan on spraying. As stated you wont gain that much from 4.10s.

Like Gator said, gears help you stay in your powerband and should be used simply for that reason. For instance, me being on motor, I'm installing 4.30 gears in my new 12 bolt beceause I'm running a 28.1" tire and I need to spin my cam to about 6600-6700 in 3rd for peak results.

gears make the car feel alot faster but at the track with an A4 you would go faster(and get better mpg) by getting a torque converter instead

I had my moser 12 bolt rearend just laying around. It has 4.10's in it, because my previous two cars were six speeds. I decided to install it in my 00 WS6 with A4. I will admit that the car feels faster, but that can be very deceiving. W/ this setup it really isn't much of a highway car, as the other guy had said. I beleive 70 mph is about 2500-2600 rpm. I didn't get my ecu changed so my speedometer is off yet. I will be going to the track on sunday, and I will find out if there are any gains to be had with this setup. I ran a 13.5 stock... I put the moser, lca, and a torque arm in.
Also, i lost the setup sheet for my TA. It should be between -2 and -3 if i remember correctly, can anyone verify this??

I went from 3.42 stock to 3.73. Felt great improvement as far as seat of the pants "pull". Then put in a converter. That is the ticket as most above have said. If I was to do it again and had to choose - I'd put in a 3500 converter with the 3.42. Put 3.73 in the 10 bolt max. If you go to a bigger tire as a 28" and NEED 4.10 to compensate - you had better upgrade to at least a 12 bolt. We all know the stock 10 bolts are, ummm, phsyically challanged?
My torque arm is at -2 for street/strip.

I currently run a TCI SSF-3,500 Converter and at first had the stock 3.42 gears in a 10-bolt. At the track, I ran 12.6 - 12.7@103.5 MPH. Once I added the 4:10 gears, the car slowed to 12.8 but remained more consistent with the MPH @104.5 easily. I, too, have my pumpkin at -2 degrees which helped out with hooking-up. I run 315/35-17 on the street & 26-11.5-17 at the drags. Does not love highway driving as it revs much higher earlier, but I see it as a savings on speeding tickets.

I finally ran the car with the 4.10's in my A4 on Sunday. I went from 13.55 @101.5 to a 13.23 @ 106.XX 3 tenths with basically only gears added... lca's to... Shift into overdrive just after the finish line.... I am going to switch to 3.73's because I plan to do much more modding.....

3.42 vs a 4.10 in a quarter and you would not gain much? Your are dreaming too. If you can keep car hooked up you can cut .5 secs of more off it in a 1/4 miles with 4.10's
