Default am i being ripped?

i took my 2k trans am to a mechanic for a suspected axle bearing being shot, which in reality should be around $200-$250 to fix due to labor involved..
i just got a call from him however, saying that it's going to be around $600
he said my diagnose was correct, it is an axle bearing.. but it also screwed up something else on the axle (i forgot the name of the part on the axle that it screwed up)

so my question is.. could a faulty axle bearing cause more damage to something, amounting to around $600?

what could have gone wrong?

thanks

oh, i went and looked at the damage
the bearing fucked up the axle shaft's surface..it had a whole bunch of little nicks in it
so if you replace the bearing but not the axle shaft, itll screw up the bearing again..
oh.. and there were a few seals that were obviously leaking, had rearend's oil all over the undercarriage

we took a look at the other axle shaft, and it seemed more or less ok. the surface had only one imperfection on it, on the part where the bearing rides.. better than the other one which had about 10-12 nicks in it.

how could this have happened, i'm curious? i mean.. here you have the axle shaft surface.. which is smooth.. here you have the bearing.. which is also smooth.
one smooth part on another smooth part. how did the surface get all screwed up?

the #1 killer of bearings is dirt.

or metal shavings could have gotten in there.

For $600 you should be able to find a used 10-bolt that is in damn near perfect condition.

Might be a better option.

Dude you are gettin reamed with on lube on that labor. Do the work yourself, those 10 bolts are cake to work on IMO.

Everything looks decent except for the labor. I usually charge right around $250 labor for a gear set up, maybe another 50 for axle bearings. You could buy all those parts cheaper, but the shop is going to make some money on the parts also, and that is just a little higher than a typical jobber price.

yea i guess the labor is kinda high... the parts seem to be "retail" that most of our sponsors would charge but im thinkin the labor shouldent be outa the 300 range but at this point ill just have to wait n see the cars already apart in their hands so i guess im past the point of negoation
