Default Humor the noob with "dummy answers"

I've been driving compacts my whole life, I currently drive a SRT-4. After much thought, I'm definately going GTO in the next 6 months.

That being said, I don't know much about domestic RWD stuff. I understand the "rear end" is the box that connects the drive shaft to the rear wheels and all, but when the talk gets into diff covers and CVs I'm lost

If I want to go SC and 3.91's ... is it safe to assume I'll need some rear end work? If so what and why (this is the noob part ) Also, I've been told, when you go with wider wheels or traction components, you're asking for trouble with this rear end. Does the GTO have a "10 bolt"? If so, why is a "12 bolt" better as I have read.

not a 100% on how strong the rears are in the gto's but its neither a 10 bolt or 12 bolt its independent rear suspension, kinda like a vette or new cobra
has a center section then cv shafts out to the wheels the shafts are usally a weak point i believe

It's a 8.5" Dana IRS....You're basically looking at upgrading much like the IRS C5 vette's do. That i gonna include input/output shafts...etc.

As far as builidng one to hold power. You planning on launchin on slicks at the track often, or is it mostly a street car? The buildup mostly depeds on what you wanna do with the car.

Might wanna research this section of ls1tech. Many of your answers can be had there with a little searching...
