Default 10-Bolt Idea...

I have been drawing up plans for making my stock 10-bolt stronger. I think if i used 1/4 sheet metal and cut braces to weld onto the case. To put this into perspective i mean as if your looking at the top to the rear end and with the d/s being in front of you. I would weld these braces in the same vertical position that the d/s would be at if you were at the point of view above. I would do 5-6 braces and then weld 2 braces (legnth wise) between the main braces to make side flex not an issue. I was going to do this while doing a t/a girdle and 4.10 gear swap. How does this idea sound. I though of this because many people attribute case flex and then gear mis-alignment to the famous 10-bolt break. Just an idea. If some people think it may help then I will do it and report. I will be running 400+ rwhp on 275 street tires.
Thanks, Brian Kaiser

been there done that...

we welded 1/4" steel box tube down the length of my old 10-bolt, welded the axle tubes to the pumpkin, used a solid pinion spacer and TA cover. Granted I never broke a gearset...but I tore out 3 differentials with it (auburn pro and 2 torsens)

I bit the bullet and went with a 9"...never looked back

You can put all the makeup in the world on a pig but it's still a pig.

Brian, I've looked into it extensively. Do a search on the board for 10 bolt and read up. Everything is prone to failure. Guys with stock power have broken gears, diffs, axles, basically anything that can be broken, has. It sucks, but that is just the way it is. You might get lucky, several guys have. But probably not.

If you are handy with a welder, and need to save some money, you could just swap in a different type of rear. The 8.8 ford conversion is probably the easiest. Do a search on it and you will see what I am talking about. If you are not up for that then I would recommend a 12 bolt fab. Again, if you can handle the welding, you can probably do that for as little as the cost of the donor rear (pickup, or older car) and the custom axles ($300).

Good luck !

I am getting a 9" Ford housing for cheap. If you can do your own fab, I'd go that route. I am also getting the 3rd member for free, so I am going to try to have less than $1000 in it. If that means I have to run a spool for a while, that's fine.

The fab is the expensive part....

Save your time and money and wait for a deal on a new/used 12 bolt or 9 inch.
